WKMBA will be offering a Fall Ball program again this fall for the 11U, 13U and 15U and 18U divisions.

The purpose of the Fall program is to give our players a head start on next year and to extend the playing season while the weather is nice with a focus on development. This is also a chance to bring players together that were in different programs and teams over the regular season. Fall Ball is designed to give players an opportunity to work on improving the five tools of baseball. We look to improve hitting for power, and hitting for average, throw and catching, as well as overall speed. The focus is on having fun and working hard.

WKMBA hosted the BCBA 2018 13U A East, Provincials this past weekend (August 8-12). The 10 team tournament began on Thursday morning and concluded Sunday evening. A total of 23 games were played to determine a winner. There was only 1 game over the weekend that had to be delayed due to darkness but was made up on Sunday. This did however cause the semi final games and championship game to be pushed back 3 hours on Sunday.

The tournament began with a coaches meeting Wednesday night, hosted by BC Baseball, followed by 6 games on Thursday.
Thursday night saw the Opening Ceremonies go off without a hitch. West Kelowna Mayor, Doug Findlater welcomed all the guest to West Kelowna. Followed by Parade of Teams, onto the field and singing of O Canada, led by Carol Katelnikoff.
Following the Opening Ceremonies, the skill competition took place. This was a 4 event competition. Winning players were given gift bag and concession coupon. West Kelowna won the base running relay. Good job Boys!!!

Friday saw a full slate of 8 games, which began at 9am and went till after 8pm.

Saturday was the windup of the pool play.

Sunday was the semi-finals and Championship games. In the Semifinals, Aldergrove beat Prince George and Salmon Arm beat Abbotsford. In the Championship game, Salmon Arm Hornets beat Aldergrove Dodgers to win the 2018 Provincial Championship.

I received so many compliments from coaches, parents, and spectators on what a well-run tournament we put on.

A great big thank to Teena Gillmore and all the volunteers who helped make this tournament a success.

The 13U A Snakes get an automatic berth as host in the Provincial but still must compete in Zone Playoffs to determine seeding and which pool they will play in, the Zone playoffs are being held in Penticton.

This past weekend, the West Kelowna 18U College Prep D-Backs made the trip to Seattle, WA to participate in the Josh Dickerson Tournament. West Kelowna joined 8 of the Seattle-Area’s premier 18U Baseball Clubs for a weekend showdown in the “Emerald City”. The D-Backs competed alongside teams such as the Narrows Baseball Club, Seattle Stars, Washington Athletics, the Bellevue Boys of Summer, Benz Baseball and 3 teams from Seattle’s Baden Baseball Club.

While the scoresheets didn’t go in favor of West Kelowna over the weekend, the D-Backs fought hard, narrowly losing Game 1 to the Narrows Baseball Club by a score of 1-0. Game 2 saw them lose 9-0 to the “Premier” squad from the Baden-sponsored Seattle club. Game 3 against the Washington A’s ended in a 7-3 loss, followed by a 9-3 Loss to the Baden Red team. In the final game, the D-backs were edged out 8-0 by the Baden Black squad.

Although the D-Backs walked away winless, the team from West Kelowna had an amazing opportunity to be put up to the measuring stick against some of the stiffest competition that Washington state had to offer.

Making the most of their trip, the D-Backs had the opportunity to enjoy the city on Saturday Night, taking in an MLB match-up between the home town Mariners and the 2015 World Series Champion Kansas City Royals which saw the Mariners take the game 6-4.

The D-Backs return to West Kelowna this weekend for a pair of double headers at home, kicking off Saturday against 1-seed Chilliwack Cougars at 1pm & 3:30pm followed on Sunday by games against the Ridge Meadows Royals at 1pm & 3:30pm.
